Troubleshooting Pointers for Dalhart Homeowners Dealing With Fickle Furnaces

Furnace Troubleshooting 101

Here are some troubleshooting pointers for handling a fickle furnace or heat pump in your home:

  • Check the heating system’s thermostat. Is it on and set to the proper temperature? If not, resetting the thermostat may solve the problem. If the thermostat runs from a battery, change the battery and see if that clears the problem.
  • If the thermostat appears to be working but the furnace still isn’t, check the breaker box. Make sure all the breakers associated with the heating system are on. You may find that a breaker has been tripped, and if so, reset it and see if the furnace begins to respond.
  • Take a look at the furnace door. There may be a latch on the door that must be closed before the system will work. Make sure the door is closed and see if the system starts.
  • Check the furnace air filter. When an air filter becomes clogged, it can affect the ability of the heating system to keep the house warm. It can also overwork the system causing it to shut down prematurely. If the air filter is clogged or even dirty, replace it with a fresh air filter.
  • Examine all air intakes and registers. The furnace draws air from the house and heats it up before sending it back into the house. If the airflow is blocked at either the intake or outlet points, it can affect the ability of the furnace to do its job.
  • If the furnace uses gas or oil as fuel, make sure you have fuel. Try shutting the gas reset valve off. Then open it up in five minutes and try starting it. With an older system, verify the pilot light is lit.
